Correcting Nationality in a U.S. Passport: American National & American Indian Status

Most people assume that the only status a U.S. passport can reflect is “United States Citizen.” However, federal law recognizes more than one form of nationality. For example, individuals born in certain territories, as well as many American Indians and Tribal members, may qualify as American Nationals but not U.S. Citizens. When the passport lists “United States Citizen” by default, it may misstate the person’s lawful status.
